• The strategic location of the region means it serves a corresponding transit function. Specifically, Poti Port, links Asian and European countries, while domestically the region links the eastern and western parts of the country. In recent years, the banking sector has significantly developed in this region. Branches and service centers of commercial banks function in each self-governing unit. Moreover, the number of microfinance organizations has also increased and several audit firms are functioning in the region as well as branches of almost all of the country’s main insurance companies being represented in Zugdidi and Poti.
• During recent years, positive trends have been noted in the region in processing and exporting enterprises (for instance, the production and processing of nuts has been increasing significantly over the last 10 years). Development trends have also been observed in the service sphere, while retail spaces have also improved markedly.
